Understanding the Importance of Broad-Spectrum Sun Protection: UVA vs. UVB

When it comes to sun protection, most people know to look for sunscreen with a high SPF to protect against harmful UV rays. There are 3 types of UV rays, UVA UVB and UVC. However, only two of those can affect us: UVA and UVB, because UVC is protected by the Earth's ozone layer. Understanding the differences between the two and the importance of protecting against both is crucial for maintaining healthy skin.

  • UVA can penetrate deep into the skin and can cause skin wrinkles, aging, and sagging.

  • UVB can affect the epidermis, causing sunburn and even skin cancer.

How can we protect ourselves from the sun?

We should protect ourselves from the sun by practicing three methods:

  • Cover up. Wear protective clothing, including a hat and sunglasses that reflect UV rays.

  • Apply a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB (broad spectrum) and has an SPF of at least 30. Also, reapply every two hours.

  • If you can avoid the sun, avoid it. It is best to stay inside. But if you go outside, you should not stay in the sun for a long time, especially around 10 am to 2 pm, which is a period of high UV radiation. Staying under the shade is also a good way to protect yourself.
